The Problem with the Legacy Datacenter

Legacy infrastructure—with separate storage, storage networks, and servers—is not well suited to meet the growing demands of a service- oriented delivery model or the fast pace of modern business. The silos used in traditional datacenters have become a barrier to rapid adaptation, adding complexity to every step from…ordering to deployment to management.

Enterprise IT teams today are looking for ways to deliver on- premises technology services with the speed and operational efficiency of the public cloud. The Nutanix hyperconverged infrastructure is the perfect bridge between the static siloes of a legacy environment and the dynamic scalability of the cloud.

The Transition Challenge

However, the conversion from a legacy infrastructure to hyperconverged can be a challenge. While it’s important to decide which hypervisor and hardware will serve as the foundation for the new infrastructure, it’s absolutely critical to determine the migration process. Which applications and workloads need to be moved over first? How much compute power or storage will they require? What impact will they have to their users? All these factors must be compiled before the transformation can occur.

Simplifying The Move

Visual One Intelligence® provides datacenter performance, capacity and operational data at the host and storage level. Data collection occurs unobtrusively and sent to the Cloud Analytic Database via a secure protocol. From there, the data is processed into an intuitive and comprehensive report that leverages four Key Differentiators:

The holidays are always a time to reflect.

As I sit back to reflect on the year that was 2018, there are two words that come to my mind: purpose and transformation.

We started off the year by celebrating our 25thanniversary on March 1, with many of you, at the biggest event we have held at Clear Technologies. Thank you to all 250 clients, partners and employees past and present who were able to join. For those not there, we discussed how Clear Technologies was started primarily as an AS400 reseller, and while some still know us as just that, a majority of you know us for things far different. Our purpose has always the same – to provide meaningful value to our clients. As I said that night, it was a celebration of our past, but also an acknowledgement of our future and the company we want to be for the next 25 years.

We continued a busy month of March by attending IBM Think where I was asked to represent Clear Technologies on stage during the opening session and discuss our transformation from a niche reseller to creator of homegrown intellectual property, such as Visual One Intelligence® which has enabled us to grow and expand our business. We were also excited to be chosen as IBM Global Financing’s partner of the year at IBM THINK. IGF has been a strategic piece of our business for many years, and the recognition of our team’s expertise in that arena is well-deserved.

In the spring, we were privileged to be selected as the winner of the Horizon Award for Outstanding Partner Performance from West, the Unified Communications service provider. Clear and West, as well as the Cisco team which was instrumental in our success, have enjoyed a great partnership over the past year, and the award was testament to hard work our team has put forth in growing our Cloud services practice. As we continue to grow that practice the rest of this year and on into 2019, we look forward to more success in the collaboration, contact center, cloud, colo and connectivity space with West and other partners.

Another part of our continued transformation was the launch of our Artificial Intelligence and IOT practice, Clear Intelligence. Brian Murphy joined Clear as our Chief Innovation Officer and has overseen the development and growth of Clear Intelligence as we have started this new venture. Clear Intelligence started off the same way that Visual One Intelligence® did – by trying to creatively solve our clients’ problems. Have you noticed a trend?

That is our purpose. By following our purpose, to provide meaningful value, we had a tremendous year including successes such as developing a solution which we submitted to IBM’s Watson Build Contest. Our solution was chosen as one of the 10 finalist. Out of hundreds of applicants worldwide that proposed a solution in the contest, many being software developers and large consulting organizations, Clear Technologies, a small business headquartered in Addison, Texas, which launched its practice, Clear Intelligence, this year beat them out to be named a finalist. We are so very proud of our team for that and many other great achievements through the course of the year.

These are only a few of the major accomplishments that made this a year to remember. Whether it is the large accomplishments or the little daily wins, they all start with purpose. Sometimes we speak of transformation as a journey that eventually has an end when you reach your perceived goal or destination. However, the truth is I don’t think our transformation will ever reach a “conclusion.” That is because our purpose is to provide meaningful value to our customers, and your needs will change. The technology you need will change. The problems you need solved will change. Our purpose will not change, and we will continue to transform so that we can provide the valuable solutions you need most. Happy Holidays! And we look forward to continuing to be your partner of choice in 2019.

Sincerely,

Phil Godwin

Clear Technologies is excited to announce it was chosen by IBM to be a finalist in the North American Watson Build contest. Last week, the team from Clear’s AI/IOT division, Clear Intelligence, represented Clear’s solution in New York City against other top finalists. Clear is very proud of our solution and the value it can bring to our clients.

The 2018 Watson Build contest is the second annual competition where IBM partners and solution providers utilize the IBM Watson platforms to create new and innovative solutions around Artificial Intelligence and the IBM Cloud. There are three goals of the competition: 1) Have partners leverage IBM AI tools on their own intellectual property and create a business plan detailing the solutions 2) Build a prototype on IBM Cloud and provide subject matter expertise to optimize the solutions 3) Showcase the top solutions to industry leaders at PartnerWorld at IBM THINK in 2019. This year, there were over 500 initial applicants worldwide in the competition to create the best solution that solves clients’ issues, provides value and utilizes IBM’s Watson API’s most effectively.

Clear Technologies is honored to be among the top ten finalists in North America for the 2018 Watson Build competition. Clear has a long history of working in the Distribution Industry and has vast leadership experience through Brian Murphy’s, Clear Chief Innovation Officer, history as a former Fortune 500 CIO. For our entry in the Watson Build contest, we created a solution that utilized features such as AI Chatbots, image recognition, Blockchain and Sentiment Analysis to deliver value to distribution industry clients. Our solution targeted both client internal users through reporting and analytics, as well as a client-facing application to bring more engagement to end-user customers at quick service restaurants (QSR).

This solution, and the recognition it has garnered, is very exciting for Clear Technologies. In May 2018, Clear Technologies launched Clear Intelligence to focus on emerging technologies such as AI, IOT and Blockchain in order to solve business problems for our clients. Similar to our creation of award-winning reporting & analytics SaaS, Visual One Intelligence®, in 2010, we realize that creating unique, valuable solutions and going beyond the typical IT partner is key to our future. We appreciate this recognition of our capabilities from IBM and we are extremely excited the future Clear Intelligence brings to Clear Technologies.

NVMe and Flash – Now Available Throughout IBM Storage Portfolio

Two weeks ago, IBM made a number of significant enhancements to their storage portfolio, further enhancing one of the industry’s most complete set of solutions for storage. These announcements were focused on adding exciting and innovative upgrades to their already comprehensive and feature-rich storage portfolio including NVMe additions, enhanced data protection, Artificial Intelligence integration, and more.

One big addition is the proliferation of NVMe and Flash throughout the various storage product lines. The third generation of the mid-range workhouse of the IBM storage family, the StorWize V7000, was announced with support for support for NVMe flash storage and NVMe-over-fabrics (NVMf).Clear Technologies Chief Operating Officer and President, Phil Godwin, was recently interviewed by CRN regarding the announcement.

“IBM’s embracing of NVMe is important because NVMe is the future of storage,” Godwin said. “IBM has made a big commitment to NVMe. This gives them a great position in the marketplace. And with the increase in performance, IBM has taken care of increasing needs for power to handle things like deduplication (CRN, 2018).”

Updates were also made to the FlashSystem, San Volume Controller (SVC), and Spectrum product lines.

Clear Technologies is excited about these new announcements because it not only brings the fastest performing technologies to the market but also makes Flash itself more available to those organizations who cannot afford the highest end storage devices.

Clear Technologies is an IBM Platinum Partner and IBM Storage Expert.  With its award-winning storage reporting and analytics service, Visual One Intelligence®, Clear can show you how IBM storage systems, such as the new FlashSystem 9150, can dramatically impact your environment using your own applications’ and hosts’ requirements.  If you are looking to architect for the future of your datacenter or hybrid cloud environment, or just want to see more about how new technologies like Flash and NVMe can help solve your issues, contact Clear Technologies today.

Why did IBM buy Red Hat?

At $34-billion, it’s the biggest software acquisition ever. So, why is IBM spending so much money on Red Hat? The reason is twofold. First, it’s about positioning IBM as a cloud power. And, second, it’s about investing in open source. The two are intimately connected.

Except for Microsoft Azure, the cloud is built on Linux and open-source software. Oh, and Azure? Linux virtual machines (VM) now make up half Azure’s workloads. Many of those, by the way, are Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) VMs.

IBM has a long history of working in open source. In fact, in many ways, IBM is partly responsible for the open-source movement’s success. IBM’s strong support for Linux—with patent pledges and investment of significant technical resources in the face of some of the legal uncertainty surrounding its use in the late 1990s—brought about a change in posture toward open-source for many enterprises.

“The acquisition of Red Hat is a game-changer. It changes everything about the cloud market. IBM will become the world’s #1 hybrid cloud provider, offering companies the only open cloud solution that will unlock the full value of the cloud for their businesses,” said Ginni Rometty, IBM CEO.

Senior VP and president for IBM Hybrid Cloud Arvind Krishna has also said that while the world is keen to move to cloud computing, most customers are running multiple clouds and are only 20% or so into their cloud journey. The next stage is for real businesses to move real business applications to the cloud and be able to move and deploy applications and services between their multiple cloud environments.

IBM wanted Red Hat for it’s development of what is the world’s largest portfolio of open source technology; a hybrid cloud platform and a vast open-source developer community. Together, the two companies effectively become the world’s leading hybrid multi-cloud provider.

Red Hat will now join IBM’s Hybrid Cloud team as a distinct unit. The companies claim that this will ‘preserve the independence and neutrality’ of Red Hat’s open source development heritage and, importantly, Red Hat’s development culture. Red Hat will continue to be led by Jim Whitehurst and Red Hat’s current management team.

What does containerized apps have to do with it?

Experts say IBM’s acquisition of Red Hat opens a new dynamic in the cloud wars between IBM, Google, Amazon, and Microsoft. It gives IBM added muscles in the enterprise hybrid cloud space, and it opens up a large conversation around containerized apps and microservices infrastructure.

Both IBM and Red Hat are strong in key hybrid cloud technologies such as Linux, containers, Kubernetes, multi-cloud management, and cloud management and automation.

IBM has acquired a great foundation with Red Hat’s OpenShift, a container app platform by Red Hat built on Docker. IBM acquired two important things through OpenShift, according to Randy Heffner, an analyst for Forrester. As big as cloud is, many applications are still running on-premises because they are hard to move. There are also security or data residency concerns. “OpenShift gives IBM a story to tell for on-premise-to-cloud migration — or simply hybrid cloud/on-prem operations of containerized apps and microservices,” Heffner said.

Further, doing high-end microservice-based solutions today is rocket science, and having control of OpenShift will give IBM a leg up on crafting what one might call the “app server” for microservices, he added.

“IBM will be the leader when this deal with Red Hat is realized, though others have some toes in the water on it. Google recently announced an on-premises version of its container engine. Google is managed on your hardware, but IBM can do that, too, and will have a wider range of deployment options, including being completely customer-managed,” Heffner said.

With the acquisition of Red Hat, we look forward to IBM and its continuing development of becoming the world’s number one hybrid cloud provider.

Clear Technologies is excited about this acquisition as both a partner of Red Hat and IBM. We are partnering with end-user companies large and small on the next generation of Information Technology.   This announcement is part of the ever-changing landscape of the future of hybrid IT.  Contact us today to discuss how this announcement could benefit your Cloud and Container strategy, or read more about finding the right cloud solution for your organization.

Information is the backbone of your business. Lose access to it, and you can lose valuable time, money and even end-user clients. Yet many businesses still haven’t implemented a proper High Availability/Disaster Recovery strategy. They see it as a cost and not an investment.

The truth is, it’s very much like your homeowner’s insurance. You may not notice its benefits immediately – and may even grumble about the bill. But when disaster strikes, you’re glad it’s there. The same is true for your HA/DR.

The challenge is often determining the right solution.

Fortunately, Clear Technologies offers several tools and services to help map the best HA/DR solution with the customer’s business. For an on premises solution, we have Visual One (Visual One Intelligence®) which can offer a point in time snaphsot of critical system performance. This information can give you the tools to determine which data requires protection and the best way to do so.

If you’re exploring a could option, we have our interactive quick assessment that can help you determine the cloud-based solution that’s the best fit for your business.

And sometimes, the best strategy is a hybrid approach where multiple components such as on-prem, cloud and a co-location facility (“co-lo”) are woven together to provide a powerful, secure and cost-effective way to safeguard your data. For such solutions, Clear’s team of technical sales specialists and engineers leverage a wide variety of technology partners to build the solution that’s right for you.

Your data is as important as your home or car. Shouldn’t it have insurance, too?

Cloud-enable your IBM Power Environment

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Today, there are two basic schools of thought for architecting the infrastructure of the future: on-premise hardware or Cloud.  While both options can take many different forms (and have wildly different pros and cons), they are the basic decision one must make when modernizing their environment.  On-prem hardware can lead to lower long-term costs with better performance and more control, while Cloud offerings can offer lower upfront costs, faster speed to market and less management overhead.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]What if you could have an environment with the benefits of Cloud in on-premise architecture?

This is exactly what IBM Cloud Private offers: the speed of the public cloud with the control of owning your own hardware.  IBM Cloud Private is a Kubernetes-based container platform that embraces modern workloads and dynamic provisioning all within your own datacenter – minimizing risk, complexity and cost.  IBM Cloud Private offers Rapid Innovation, Hybrid Integration, and Compliance & Management all while leveraging your current investments.

Blockchain TSS

When you hear the term Blockchain, it likely brings to mind cryptocurrency.  Although cryptocurrency is its most publicized use, Blockchain is not simply a technology for financial institutions.  Manufacturers are also utilizing Blockchain themselves in a number of ways. One of its more innovative applications is in the realm of technology service and support. Digital ledger technology is now delivering a new level of assurance that service providers are meeting their responsibilities outlined in service-level agreements (SLAs).

IBM recently launched a new Support as a Service capability powered by IBM Blockchain and aimed at businesses engaging in digital transformation. By embedding blockchain into their Multivendor Support Services “smart contracts,” IBM can provide transparent, audit-ready transaction data while monitoring SLA metrics and accountability. This process streamlines and automates the billing processes to more closely match the speed and dynamism of the digital business model.

Blockchain – Built in Trust?

The promise of blockchain is that a shared distributed ledger creates a tamper-resistant record of transactions enabling trusted and audit-ready products and services. When using blockchain, trust is delegated to people and even objects such as sensors and monitors that occupy a shared network. If one of these data sources isn’t trusted to perform well, it can be automatically rejected by the other objects on the network, as well as the transaction record itself. In this way, the ledger and its “smart contract” become the foundation of trust.

This ability to preserve trust becomes increasingly important as contracts grow in both size and complexity and transaction data is shared continuously, in near-real time. By time-stamping contract-related events and adding them to a tamper-resistant record, support providers can effectively embed trust into the digital ledger.

Blockchain is expected to become an essential resource for the enterprise to evaluate contract performance, reduce the complexity of billing processes and eliminate unrealizable billing costs due to lack of evidence or an over-delivery of services.

With blockchain now an integral part of IBM’s Support as a Service portfolio, companies can gain the ability to independently verify the activities driving their digital business processes, providing new-found confidence that they are both delivering and receiving exactly what is expected.
